The first granny’s of the CAL!

The first 6 granny’s are a fact! The pattern of week 1 of the Scheepjes CAL 2014 is on Wink’s site, A Creative Being. The pattern asks to make 6 granny’s with a leaf pattern. I think the design clearly shows how succulents have inspired this CAL.

I have made my granny’s using acryl yarn ROMA from Scheepjes with a 3.5mm hook. They are exactly 20cm square; slightly bigger than the original 18cm the cotton design calls for, but no worries. Then my blanket is a bit bigger at the end.

The pattern is not too difficult, but there are a few things you should take care of. For example, do not make the mistake I made by not doing the first double crochet after the corner [2dc,ch 2,2dc] in the first stitch, but in the second. Of course this means that everything goes completely haywire at the end of the row before the next corner because you somehow seem to miss a stitch at the end. Move the corner stitches well to the side and make sure to make the double crochet in that first stitch! Idem ditto after the center group of double crochets, skip 1 stich and make a double crochet in the next stitch. The stich you skip is the first hole and you make your double crochet in the second stitch.

If all else fails read the instructions (which I never do hahaha), which means I have a better alternative; watch my video on week 1 of this Crochet A Long.

In total I have made 6 granny’s in warm autumn colors. I am really happy with them. The acryl yarn is nice to work with as it is light and flows through my hands smoothly.

The granny’s of week1

I can’t wait till next week when the next pattern is released so that I can make 6 more lovely granny’s 🙂
