Ubuntu Friendship Bracelet Video Tutorial

Our Ubuntu blanket is finished, but there is still a surprise for you. Those of you that have the medium or large kits will know that you have an extra kit containing a beading loom and delicate glass beads as part of your Ubuntu kit. I am sure you have been wondering what we are going to make with it. Time to let you in on the secret, we are making a friendship bracelet!  The bracelet has been designed Dedri Uys from Look at What I made as a bonus pattern for the Scheepjes crochet along 2018. Under Resources you find all the links and information you need for Ubuntu.

If you have ever visited Africa, you will have noticed that there are many women selling beaded bracelets, baskets or other things to tourists. It’s a way for these women to earn an honest living, and often a whole family of sometimes 10 people including children and grandparents are supported by the income from just one woman.

Years ago I received such a beaded souvenir from a friend. I have a bookmark made from colorful beads in a traditional arrangements. You can see how our friendship bracelet has an African feel to it, all in the spirit of ubuntu.

Video tutorials Friendship Bracelet

I have made a video tutorial showing how to make the friendship bracelet. I start the video by looking at the contents of the kit and I show you how to assemble the loom. If you have never used a loom before, assembling it can be very confusing. A small secret; I had to google how to assemble the thing because I had no clue!

Making the bracelet is a fiddly process, especially the first few rows of the bracelet. I show you how to tread the loom and work the first few rows. When you have the first rows done, the rest becomes easier, just follow the chart. We finish the bracelet by tying all the treads together and attaching the clasp.

I have an English and Dutch video to show you how to work the bracelet. This time only a right handed version for both videos because if I flip the video for left handed it will get very confusing because I am referring to left and right all the time in the video.

I think this bracelet is a lovely gift. Who are you going to give your friendship bracelet to?

With love,

Esther
