Enigma Blanket CAL in CrochetNow Magazine

More than a year ago I was asked if I would like to design a crochet along for CrochetNow Magazine. I gave it some thought, questioning myself if I could design anything good enough, and hesitantly said yes. A mood board, sketches, designing, ripping, counting, designing some more, and a lot of testing later, and the result is something to write home about! With great pride I can finally present the Enigma Blanket to you.

Enigma

You might wonder why I chose the name “Enigma” for this blanket. When I was designing it, I continuously felt like I had no idea what I was doing, stitch counts were all over the place sometimes and I took a few steps back quite a few times. It felt like the blanket was a big mystery to me, a puzzle I was trying to solve; one big enigma. The name had a nice ring to it, so I decided to keep it.

The Enigma blanket combines floral stitches and patterns with a continuously changing shape. The blanket starts out as a small mandala which grows out to a large floral circle before it is turned into a square. The square is squared up again in the opposite direction and then becomes a rectangle. The final blanket has a vibrant feel to it with a combination of warm colors, textures, and stitch patterns.

Yarn amounts and kits

To make the blanket you can choose between the original Scheepjes Stone Washed kit, or the budget friendly Scheepjes Colour Crafter kit.

Scheepjes Stone Washed kit contains the following colors of Scheepjes Stone Washed (50g):

  • 6 x Moon Stone (801)
  • 3 x Coral (816)
  • 4 x Rose Quartz (820)
  • 4 x Carnelian (823)*
  • 5 x Malachite (825)
  • 3 x Beryl (833)
  • 4 x Tourmaline (836)

* Some kits can contain Red Jasper (807) instead of Carnelian (823) due to stock limitations. These two colors are however almost identical.

Scheepjes Colour Crafter kit contains the following colors of Scheepjes Colour Crafter (100g):

  • 3 x Barneveld (1005)
  • 2 x Leeuwarden (1711)
  • 2 x Sittard (1130)
  • 2 x Maastricht (1246)
  • 3 x Malmédy (2014)
  • 2 x Brussel (2004)
  • 2 x Luik (2006)

You can find the Stone Washed kits and Colour Crafter kits in It’s all in a Nutshell SHOP (International shipping), or visit Wool Warehouse (UK/Int). The kits should be available soon.

No, there will not be any video tutorials for this CAL.

What is the difficulty level of the project?
I would consider Enigma as “intermediate“, less suitable for the absolute beginner.

The blanket in Scheepjes Stone Washed is 105cm x 155cm, and in Scheepjes Colour Crafter is 115cm x 170cm.

I have kits available in my It’s all in a Nusthell SHOP, but you can also get kits from Wool Warehouse (UK/Int) or Black Sheep Wools (UK/Int).

With love,
Esther

  1. oh wat jammer ( maar begrijpelijk) dat er geen videotutorials worden gemaakt, anders had ik zeker meegedaan.

  2. Dear Esther, I love all your designs and when I saw your videos on YouTube your voice is so calming and explaining a stitch is slow and detailed. Is there any way you would be doing any afghan in a 4 weight yarn. I’m on a fixed income and I have more of a chance to get 4 weight yarns in the colors of your afghans than a dk weight. I would love to have the sheepjes stonewashed but I can’t. Again all of your designs are beautiful and thank you for sharing them. 💗
