This post contains the free crochet pattern for my Biesbosch Blanket, which is made from Scheepjes Stone Washed XL and River Washed XL yarn. The blanket is made from granny squares with a white border. The blanket is warm and comfortable, perfect for a chilly evening.

Abbreviations

This pattern uses US crochet terminology. If you are more familiar with UK crochet terms, you can find a conversion chart HERE.

Size

When finished, the blanket measures 110cm / 45inches wide and 160cm / 65inches long.

Notes

The stitch count given for the squares is per edge, not including the chains that make up the corners.
Feel free to work more, or less, squares to change the size of the blanket to your needs.

Pattern – Biesbosch Blanket

Squares

Round 1 (RS) With one of the Centre Square Colors, ch3, close with ss to from a ring, ch5 (counts as 1dc and ch3), (1dc in ring, ch3) 3 times, close to second chain with ss. [1 dc]

Round 2 (RS) Ss to ch3-sp, (beg-cl, ch3, 1cl) in ch3-sp, *ch2, 1dc in next dc, ch2, (1cl, ch3, 1cl) in ch3-sp; repeat from * to end omitting final sts in ch-sp, close to first st with ss. [2 cl, 2 ch2-sps, 1 dc]

Round 3 (RS) Ss to ch3-sp, (beg-cl, ch4, 1cl) in ch3-sp, *ch3, dc2tog over next 2 ch2-sps, ch3, (1cl, ch4, 1cl) in ch3-sp; repeat from * to end omitting sts in final ch-sp, close to first st with ss. [2 cl, 2 ch3-sps, 1 dc2tog]

Round 4 (RS) Ss to ch4-sp, ch2 (counts as 1dc), (2dc, ch2, 3dc) in ch4-sp, *4dc in next 2 ch3-sps, (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in ch4-sp; repeat from * to end omitting sts in final ch4-sp, cut yarn and close with invisible join. [14 dc]

Round 5 (RS) With Stone Washed XL in color “Moon Stone”, standing sc in any ch2-sp, 1sc in same ch2-sp, PM, 1sc in same ch2-sp, *1sc in BLO of next 14 sts, (2sc, PM, 1sc) in ch2-sp; repeat from * to end omitting final 3 sts, join to first st with ss, ss to MS. Turn. [16 sc]

Round 6 (WS) Ch1 (does not count as a st), *(2sc, PM, 1sc) in MS, 1sc in next 16 sts; repeat from * to end, join to first st with ss, ss to MS. Turn. [18 sc]

Round 7 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as a st), *3sc in MS, 1sc in next 18 sts; repeat from * to end, cut yarn and join to with invisible join. [20 sc]

Each square is approximately 15.5cm / 6in. Work 4 squares for each of the Centre Square colors except colors Deep Amethyst (851) and Mersey (979) for which you work only 3 squares. Use the Centre Square color for Rounds 1 to 4, and Stone Washed XL in color “Moon Stone” for Rounds 5 to 7.

Joining the squares

Arrange the squares according to the layout given in the chart or use your own layout. The joining of the squares is done in continuous rows, square by square until an entire row is finished. Very important: do not cut your yarn after 2 squares are joined but only cut your yarn when you reach the end of a row. First join all the horizontal rows of the blanket and only then join the vertical rows.

Joining is done from right to left for right handed people or left to right for left handed people. One thing that is VERY important, make sure that your squares don’t twist on themselves, particularly when you have only one or two rows joined. You will be so mad at yourself if that happens.

Maybe when you read the description of the join you feel a bit lost. I show you how to join the blanket in THIS VIDEO, maybe that helps you visualize the joining process.

Horizontal join

With Stone Washed XL in color “Moon Stone” make a slip knot on your hook and align the first two squares that need to be joined with their right sides facing upwards, in other words, with their back sides facing each other. Make a slip stitch through the corner-sc of both squares, making sure that your yarn is BELOW your work between the squares. You will be joining the squares by catching one loop at a time on each of the two squares directly opposite each other. These are the two most inner loops of the squares as they lay next to one another.

Insert your hook from front to back in the inner loop of the first stitch. Then insert the hook in the inner loop (also from front to back) of the first stitch of the opposite square and pull your yarn through all loops on your hook to complete the slip stitch. Continue to the next stitch and join in the same way till you have joined all stitches up to the next corner-sc.

When you reach the end of the first two squares, make a slip stitch through the corner-sc of both squares. DO NOT CUT your yarn, but continue on to the next two squares.

Align the next two squares that are to be joined adjacent to the first two. Pay extra attention that you have the squares in the correct order. You will be amazed at how easy it is to get your squares connected in mirror image.

Continue by making a slip stitch through the corner-sc of the next two squares and then join each of the stitches with a slip stitch in exactly the same way as the previous square. Continue till all the squares in one row are joined. Now you can cut your yarn.

Continue like this for all the horizontal lines in the blanket. Be careful to ensure your previously joined squares are NOT TWISTED when you move from one row to the next.

Vertical join

Use the same method when joining the vertical joins in the blanket.

A tip: although this is not strictly necessary, I find that my joins are more flexible when I do the following when I reach a crossing. Work a sc through the corner-sc of the two squares currently at, ch1 to cover the slip stitches from the horizontal join, ss through the corner-sc of the next two squares.

Border

Round 1 Join Stone Washed XL in color “Moon Stone” in any one of the corner stitches of the blanket (this is the second of the 3 sc worked in the corner) with a standing sc in the BLO, 2sc in BLO of same stitch, sc in BLO of all stitches to next corner of the blanket (also work a sc either side of the joins when you get to a join between two squares), 3sc in BLO of corner stitch; repeat from * to end omitting final 3 sts, close with ss in first stitch.

Round 2 Ch1, crab stitch in every stitch all the way around the blanket, close with ss in first stitch, fasten off.

Finishing

Work away all yarn tails and block blanket to given measurements.
