After a fun first week of Last Dance on the Beach CAL in which we made popcorn squares designed by Esther from Happy in Red, this week we are making star stitches in a square designed by Kirsten from Haak maar Raak. Last Dance on the Beach Crochet Along is hosted by Scheepjes in loving memory of Wink.
This weeks square Kirsten looks back on her walk with Wink and her design for Last Dance on the Beach. With the star stitch she has embedded an almost mystical creature into our blanket. A starfish is called a ‘fish’ and is a live animal, but looks almost alien in its appearance. When I see a starfish washed up on the beach I am always intrigued by this beautiful creature of the sea.
I have two yarn kits, the Merino Soft Dancing in the Sea and the Color Crafter Dancing in the Sea. My Color Crafter blanket I am making using the colors specified in the pattern, but with the Merino Soft kit I am playing with color.
I have chosen to alternate the colors for the rows of stars to make them more pronounced. I also had to experiment with hook size to get the correct gauge. I had to go up to a 5.5mm hook to get the required 8 rows of stars in my Merino Soft yarn. As a reference, I made the popcorn squares of week 1 with a 4.5mm hook. This difference in hook size illustrates how important it is to use your gauge swatch.
If you want to play with color like I do, please realize that you do this at your own risk. There is a bit of extra yarn in the kits, but there is no guarantee that there is enough yarn if you use multiple colors in one square. If I run out of a color I may have to buy extra.
These are the colors that I used from my Merino Soft Dancing in the Sea kit and arranged according to the photograph above from left to right. I used a 5.5mm hook for my Merino Soft kit and a 5mm hook for my Color Crafter kit. Be sure to check your squares with your gauge swatch to determine the right hook for your personal way of working. If needed, frog and work again.

All videos for Last Dance on the Beach are available through my YouTube channel and on my blog grouped on two this dedicated video pages, English and Dutch. These pages will be updates as new tutorials become available.
I have a video available in English and Dutch. Please note that I use UK crochet terms in the English video. If you are more familiar with US terms, this conversion chart will help you with the most common terms.
For those of you that are left handed I have the video for week 2 available in English and Dutch. There are also available on the English and Dutch video pages. Again, please note that the English videos use UK crochet terminology.
If you still want to join the CAL, there are kits available in two yarns and in three color ways. You can choose a base kit with Color Crafter yarn or a luxury kit with Merino Soft yarn. The three color ways are Dance in the Sea, Dance in the Rain and Dancing under the stars. Both kits have yarn and a special edition label to add to your afghan. If you choose for the luxury kit you will also get lots of other goodies. And maybe the best part of this project is that 2 euro of each kit sold goes to a charity aimed at helping people with mental health difficulties. Kits are available from Paradise Fibers (USA/CA), Wool Warehouse (UK/International), Deramores (UK/International), or your local Scheepjes stockist.
