Announcement: Nuts about Squares CAL

It is with great joy that I can announce to you my new crochet along Nuts About Squares. I have been working on this quietly for more than a year and now the time has finally come to share my nutty project with you.

A small definition from the scholars at Cambridge:

be nuts about (sth/sb)
Informal. To be very enthusiastic about an object, activity, or person.

We are all nuts about something or someone; something that we really enjoy doing or someone that we love to hang around with. I love to crochet squares and hence the name Nuts About Squares was quickly born for this, my very first CAL. This CAL is not so much my design because the squares are designed by others, but it is my selection. Squares that appeal to me and that I consider beautiful. I did have some help choosing, testing and working out the details, but that I will tell later. You can find all relevant information HERE.

Nuts about Squares CAL

What are we making?

We are making a blanket with 35 lovely squares designed by 11 talented crochet designers. Some of them are well known and admired for their fabulous designs, others are perhaps less known but I am sure you will love their designs also. Contributing designers are Dedri Uys, Helen Shrimpton, Polly Plum, Sigrun Hugoey, Melissa Green, Heather Gibbs, Julie Yeager, Margaret MacInnis, Susan Stevens/Mellie Blossom, Aurora Suominen, and Tatsiana Kupryianchyk. Each square has been carefully selected to ensure that the squares work together well in their look and feel. Most of the squares are textured and have an artistic look about them.

Colorways and yarn packs

There are three colorways available for this CAL, one in Scheepjes Color Crafter, one in Scheepjes Sunkissed and one in Scheepjes Stone Washed. Each colorway contains 6 colors and has its own look around the central theme “Earth, Sea and Sky”.

The Color Crafter kit contains blue and green colors and is called “Nuts about the Sea”, the Sunkissed kit contains contrasting and deep colors and is called “Nuts about the Sky”, and the Stone Washed kit contains earthy colors and is called “Nuts about the Earth”.

Depending on which kit you have and your personal tension your blanket will be approximately the following sizes. The Color Crafter blanket will be about 130cm x 180cm, the Stone Washed blanket about 115cm x 160cm, and the Sunkissed blanket about 100cm x 140cm.

The kits are available from Wool Warehouse, Deramores and Caro’s Atelier (NL). Thank you for supporting my work by buying your yarn through the links on my blog.

Yarn kits Nuts about Squares

If you have one of the three kits for this CAL you can follow the colorway that I will specify each week. However, you are more than welcome to follow your own colorway also. I will give more details about yarn amounts and tips for choosing colors next week.

Some practical information

The CAL will last 15 weeks and starts March 31, 2017. During the first 12 weeks we will be making the squares, followed by 2 weeks for joining and one week for the border. Each week there will be English video tutorials to show you how to make the squares for that week as well as links to the original written patterns in English and Dutch.

Where to find all the info

Each week I will have a post here on my blog with all the information you need for that week, for example which colors to use and links to the original patterns. On my YouTube channel you will also find the video tutorials. The CAL will be hosted by the Official CCC Social Group on Facebook. In this group you can ask questions and show your work so be sure to join the group if you have not already done so.

Mandala Madness – all video tutorials, colors list and yardage

Mandala madness crochet along designed by Helen Shrimpton is completed. In a long journey over 18 weeks that took us through a few bumpy bits and sharp turns we all came out reasonably unscathed the other side. Time to show you my completed mandala.

Resources

Yarn & yarn packs

There are/were various yarn packs available for the crochet along.

These yarn packs are available from Wool Warehouse and Deramores, as well as selected Scheepjes Stockists.

I preferred not to use a kit, but to go my own way; like I always do actually. I used Scheepjes Sunkissed and Scheepjes Cotton 8 with a 3mm (D-3) hook to make my mandala. I had no preset plan for my list of colors or color distribution, I just took it week by week using leftovers from other projects and yarn from my stash. I ended up using 11 shades of Sunkissed and 8 shades of Cotton 8; that is a very bright total of 19 colors. No wonder my mandala is such a color explosion. I hadn’t realized that there were that many colors until I counted them. You can find all the details of which colors I used for each round in my color chart.

Mandala Madness completed - 2

I have done some calculation on how much yarn you need of each color to make a mandala similar to mine. Please realize that this is an estimate based on my personal tension and style of crochet. If your tension is much different to mine you may need more or less yarn than I needed. Both Sunkissed and Cotton 8 come in 50g balls and have a running length of 170m per ball. I have calculated the yarn amount I used per color and rounded it up to get the number of balls. Inevitably there will be some left-overs from certain colors. It turns out that there is a whopping 4km of yarn in my mandala. WOW!!!

Yarn & number  Color name  Yarn amount  Number of balls
Sunkissed – 04 poolside 240m 2
Sunkissed – 05 seaside 340m 2
Sunkissed – 10 lavender ice 290m 2
Sunkissed – 12 beach hut orange 170m 1
Sunkissed – 13 cherry ice 460m 3
Sunkissed – 14 spearmint green 235m 2
Sunkissed – 15 noonday sun 360m 3
Sunkissed – 17 summer rain 205m 2
Sunkissed – 19 candy floss 150m 1
Sunkissed – 20 beach hut pink 190m 2
Sunkissed – 21 ultra violet 170m 1
Cotton 8 – 508 soft yellow 105m 1
Cotton 8 – 652 grey-blue 365m 3
Cotton 8 – 661 purple 25m 1
Cotton 8 – 669 olive 210m 2
Cotton 8 – 716 orange 30m 1
Cotton 8 – 717 bordeaux 230m 2
Cotton 8 – 720 fuchsia 100m 1
Cotton 8 – 721 heath 135m 1

If you prefer, you can also use one of the yarn packs that are available for this CAL in Scheepjes Color CrafterScheepjes Stone Washed XL and Scheepjes Merino Soft, available from Deramores and Wool Warehouse.

Video tutorials

Each week I had a video tutorial for you to show you how to work the stitches. In the beginning I was miles ahead of you, but as time went by and our mandala grew in size my time seemed to shrink and at the end I even fell a little bit behind. The series of all video tutorials is now completed. You can find all the videos for Mandala Madness on my YouTube channel and on my blog grouped on this dedicated video page.

Video tutorial Mandala Madness week 17

I’m feeling like the poor rabbit from “Alice in Wonderland” …..

I’m late! I’m late!
For a very important date!
No time to say “Hello”, goodbye!
I’m late! I’m late! I’m late!

I to am late for a very important date. Making the video for part 17 of Mandala Madness has taken more time than I had hoped, but looking at all the details of this part it is almost inevitable that it would take me more time than one part usually does. The video for week 17 is more than 1.5 hours long, so it took me a LOT of time to make for you (keep in mind that it takes me up to 8 times longer to make a video than the video duration). But, happily I am here now, and all is well that ends well!

MANDALA-madness-part-17-a

We are almost done with our mandala and this week we are seriously decorating the shells we made last week. We are making lots of back and front post stitches, popcorns, clusters and other frills to decorate the outer edge of the mandala. And no worries if you think this is too hard for you, in the video I show you everything step-by-step. All videos for Mandala Madness are available through my YouTube channel and on my blog grouped on this dedicated video page. In the video for week 17 I show you how to work the decorations for this week.

I use two Scheepjes yarns for my mandala; Scheepjes Sunkissed and Scheepjes Cotton 8 with a 3mm (D-3) hook. There are yarn packs available for this CAL in Scheepjes Color CrafterScheepjes Stone Washed XL and Scheepjes Merino Soft, available from Deramores and Wool Warehouse. Here a list of the colors I used for week 17.

Round   Yarn  Color number  Color name
round 103 Sunkissed 14 spearmint green
round 104 Sunkissed 13 cherry ice
round 105 Cotton 8 652 grey-blue
round 106 Cotton 8 717 bordeaux
round 107 Cotton 8 652 grey-blue

A small peak at my mandala at the moment. I will show you the full result next time when we finish this project.

Only one more part to go and we are all done. Next time we are finishing up our mandala and then I will give you a complete list of all the colors I used for each round as well as the amount of yarn I used per color. And of course a full reveal and lots of photographs of my mandala.

With love,

Esther

Video tutorial Mandala Madness week 16

Just in the nick of time I have managed to get the video for week 16 of Mandala Madness to you on time. This week we are starting the final stage of our journey together, the end is in sight now. Just a few more steps….

Our final encore for our mandala begins with the sun slowly setting on the horizon. This week we are making a series of half-suns at the outer edge of the mandala. Next week we will decorate the suns a bit more and then we will complete the last edges in week 18. A not of warning, the suns are not all identical and they are not spaced equally from each other, so keep paying attention to the pattern.

All videos for Mandala Madness are available through my YouTube channel and on my blog grouped on this dedicated video page. In the video for week 16 I show you how to work the stitches for this week.

Here a list of the colors I used for week 15.

Round   Yarn  Color number  Color name
round 98 Sunkissed 20 beach hut pink
round 99 Sunkissed 15 noonday sun
round 100 Sunkissed 15 noonday sun
round 101 Sunkissed 12 beach hut orange
round 102 Cotton 8 717 bordeaux

The outer edge of my mandala looks like this at the moment. I will only make a full view photo again when it is completed, just to give you a bit of a surprise at the end 🙂

MANDALA-madness-part-16-b

I am currently working on the video for week 17 and there are a lot of details for next week. Not difficult, just time consuming. Hence I can’t guarantee that it will be ready next week. I will do my best, promise.

With love,

Esther
