Video tutorials Last Dance on the Beach week 6

We are halfway with the squares for Last Dance on the Beach CAL were we are onto week 6.  This week we are doing Corner to Corner (also called C2C) crochet; a fun technique that may be new to some of you but is definetally worth a try. The square for this week is designed by Carmen from Craftsy Queens and with her design she looks back on her walk with Wink and her design for Last Dance on the Beach.

Every week I am looking for a connection between the square and the sea theme of the CAL. This week as a bit harder than the weeks before, but I just stumbled on this image. The stripes in my C2C square really resemble these formations at an estuary in Thailand.

Colors used

I am still playing with color placement in my Merino Soft Dancing in the Sea kit and for my Color Crafter Dancing in the Sea blanket I am using the colors specified in the pattern. I have made different stripes in the pattern to make all the squares unique; I decided that I don’t want two identical squares in my afghan. This week I used the same hook size as my gauge swatch, a 4.5mm hook for my Merino Soft squares and a 4.0mm for my Color Crafter squares.

These are the colors that I used from my Merino Soft Dancing in the Sea kit and arranged according to the photograph above from left to right. The stripe pattern is indicated as, for example, 4-4-5-4-4 which means work 4 rows in color 1, then 4 rows in color 2, 5 rows in color 1, 4 rows in color 2, and 4 rows in color 1.

Video tutorials

All videos for Last Dance on the Beach are available through my YouTube channel and on my blog grouped on two this dedicated video pages, English and Dutch. These pages will be updates as new tutorials become available.

I have a video available in English and Dutch. Please note that I use UK crochet terms in the English video. If you are more familiar with US terms, this conversion chart will help you with the most common terms.

For those of you that are left handed I have the video for week 6 available in English and Dutch. There are also available on the English and Dutch video pages. Again, please note that the English videos use UK crochet terminology.

Yarn kits

If you still want to join the CAL, there are kits available in two yarns and in three color ways. You can choose a base kit with Color Crafter yarn or a luxury kit with Merino Soft yarn. The three color ways are Dance in the Sea, Dance in the Rain and Dancing under the stars. Both kits have yarn and a special edition label to add to your afghan. If you choose for the luxury kit you will also get lots of other goodies. And maybe the best part of this project is that 2 euro of each kit sold goes to a charity aimed at helping people with mental health difficulties. Kits are available from Paradise Fibers (USA/CA), Wool Warehouse (UK/International), Deramores (UK/International), or your local Scheepjes stockist.

Participating in the CAL

To join the CAL, please join the International (English speaking) or Dutch (Nederlands) Facebook groups. You can post all your photo’s of your squares here and there are lots of people to help you if you get stuck somewhere. The patterns will be posted each week in the Facebook groups and on the Scheepjes website.

Anouncement: Last Dance on the Beach CAL

Just under a year ago we lost a wonderful, kind and creative soul in the crochet community, Marinke Slump, lovingly known as Wink. Before she left us she was working on a crochet along for Scheepjes, but unfortunately she did not complete the design. The wonderful people at Scheepjes have taken it upon them to complete one of her last projects and have asked 12 talented designers in the Scheepjes Bloggers group to finish the CAL. The result is Last Dance on the Beach Crochet Along, the Scheepjes CAL 2016.

This CAL has kits available in two yarns and in three color ways.

We will be making squares during this CAL; some beautiful in their simplicity, others more intricate and detailed. Do not be concerned that this special CAL might be too difficult for you. I will be helping you with step-by-step video tutorials each week to get you through the difficult bits. Due to the nature of this CAL where each square is designed by a different designer, you will have to change hook sizes and take extra with certain squares to get them all to the same size. The Color Crafter blanket will be about 115cm x 150cm, the Merino Soft about 130cm x 160cm.

All kits go on sale April 1, 2016 and are available from Paradise Fibers (USA/CA), Wool Warehouse (UK/International), Deramores (UK/International), or your local Scheepjes stockist.

Last Dance on the Beach starts on April 20, 2016. To join the CAL, please join the International (English speaking) or Dutch (Nederlands) Facebook groups. The patterns will be posted each week in the Facebook groups and on the Scheepjes website.

I hope to see you all at the start of this crochet along in loving memory of Marinke.

With love,

Esther

Scheepjes CAL 2014 blanket

My first crochet along ever is all done! My Scheepjes CAL 2014 blanket is all done. And it’s stunning, even if I say so myself. Compliments to Marinke from A Creative Being for a job extremely well done.

Resources

Yarn Packs

There were two yarn packs specifically for the CAL. The kits consist of Scheepjes Cotton 8 yarn in summer shades (kit 1) and warm autumn shades (kit 2). Each part of the pattern states which color to use when.

My firsy Scheepjes CAL blanket

I made my first blanket using Scheepjes Roma with a 3.5mm crochet hook. Roma is not widely available outside The Netherlands, but a good alternative is Scheepjes Color Crafter. My colors are mostly shades of brown and red with an accent of white and green. This was my first project and I didn’t think to keep track of which color I used when, so I don’t have a color chart for this blanket.

I used 36 balls in total. Here all the colors I used of Scheepjes Roma: 1x color 1596, 2x color 1614, 3x color 1402, 3x color 1405, 3x color 1560, 3x color 1587, 3x color 1616, 3x color 1660, 3x color 1662, 3x color 1668, 3x color 1672, 6x color 1413 for joining the grannys and the border.

My second Scheepjes CAL 2014 blanket

I made a second blanket using this wonderful pattern to make a custom order. For the custom blanket I used shades of blue and grey Cotton 8. Also for this blanket I didn’t keep track of which color I used when. I didn’t even keep track of yarn numbers for that matter. Sorry!

Video tutorials

This was the first project that I made video tutorials for. They are a little crude and rudimentary here and there, but not bad for a first time 🙂 You can read more on my first time working with Wink and doing video tutorials as part of Last Dance on the Beach CAL when I reflected back. You can find the videos in English (US Terms) and Dutch on this blog or my YouTube channel.

My journey to making my first CAL blanket ever

I really enjoyed this amazing project. It was my first CAL ever and it got me infected with the crochet virus. If you want to look back at how the blanket was made, take a look at all my posts. These posts are really basic, they were my first posts on this blog: Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4, Week 5, Week 6, Week 7, Week 8, Week 9, Week 10.

There were 2 methods for joining the squares, I chose to connect my squares using method 2. I like the stitch more because it’s nice and open and does more justice to the individual grannys. I made the border in the same color as the join.

And one more overview photo 😀

Did you also make the Scheepjes CAL 2014? I would love to see your blankets. Feel free to share your photo’s on my Facebook page or tag me in your post on Instagram. You can also use #itsallinanutshell to help me find it.

With love,

Esther
