Dawn Chorus Bullfinch Blanket – From WIP to Wrap-up

We are into the final week of the Bullfinch Blanket CKAL, and many of you are making great progress. In this photo-heavy post I would like to share a few of your lovely blankets to show the beauty of projects that are a work-in-progress. Our craft projects are just like us, we are also a work-in-progress; growing day by day into the person we are meant to be. At the same time this is also my last post for the Bullfinch Blanket, so I would like to take a moment to look back on the project as a whole.

About the Bullfinch Blanket

The Bullfinch Blanket is made from a limited edition Scheepjes Mega Whirl, and you can choose to make the knitted or crochet version of the pattern. The patterns, supporting video tutorials and tips and trics are available on the Scheepjes website and in the Scheepjes Dutch (Nederlands) language or English language (International) Facebook groups.

You can buy the Dawn Chorus Bullfinch Blanket kit from Jimmy Beans Wools (US), Wool Warehouse (UK / international), Caro’s Atelier (NL/EU) or your local Scheepjes Stockist.

KNITTED Bullfinch Blankets

The knitted blanket has 140 squares, more than 20 squares more than the crochet version of the blanket. If you are a slow knitter like I am, the blanket will take you some time. But then again, if you are like Speedy Gonzales when it comes to knitting, you should be done in a jiffy. Here some lovely examples of the knitted Bullfinch Blanket.

CROCHET Bullfinch Blanket

I have seen many crochet Bullfinch blankets in the Scheepjes Facebook groups, some far along already, and some just getting started. I really enjoy seeing each and every blanket that is shared online.

Bullfinch Blankets using Whirls

Most are making the Bullfinch Blanket using the limited edition Mega Whirl, but you can also make the blanket using any 3 regular Scheepjes Whirls. I can’t wait so see what these blankets look like when finished!

Scheepjes Whirl is available from Wool Warehouse (UK/Int), The Knitting Network (UK), Jimmy Beans Wool (USA)Caro’s Atelier (NL/EU), or your favorite Scheepjes stockist.

Tips for the border

At this point no-one is at the border yet, but by the time you get there, a few words from my side.

For the crochet version of the blanket it’s less critical how much yarn you have left at the end. If you have less yarn left than given in the pattern, you simply make your border less wide, if you have more yarn left, you make it wider.

For the knitted border it’s more critical that you have enough yarn left because the border is worked back-and-forth starting at one corner, and working it all the way around till you get back at the starting point. If this stresses you out too much, consider doing the alternative border by Amanda Beaumont which is similar to the crochet border. You can find instructions HERE.

Blocking your blanket

When you are finished you will have to block your blanket, especially if you are making the crochet version. Blocking will help to flatten out the wobble and will give you that picture perfect finish. I suggest wet-blocking your blanket, but if you have limited space available spray-blocking in sections is a good alternative. I have videos showing how to do both methods on my YouTube channel. These blocking videos are part of my TLC Blanket, which is all about learning to crochet.

Final words

The Bullfinch Blanket has been a big step for me, and especially the knitted version of the design. I have never designed a knitted blanket before, so this was a HUGE step for me. I have never designed a project in two crafts that had to look as similar as possible before. I have never recorded a knitted video project before, and the Dutch knitting terms are still not completely part of my vocabulary. All in all, many things I have never done before and it scares the living daylight out of me sometimes. But here we are; I designed it, and you made it! Together we totally got this. I hope you enjoy completing your blanket over the next few months (or years). Please continue to share your works in the Scheepjes Facebook groups. I will be in the groups from time to time to adore your work.

About the Bullfinch Blanket

The Bullfinch Blanket is made from a single Scheepjes Mega Whirl, which is an extra large version of a “regular” Whirl. You can make the Bullfinch Blanket using the Mega Whirl or 3 identical Whirls of your choice. You can choose to make either the knit or the crochet version of the blanket. For both versions, there are full written patterns and video tutorials available.

You can buy the Dawn Chorus Bullfinch Blanket kit from Jimmy Beans Wools (US), Wool Warehouse (UK / international), Caro’s Atelier (NL/EU) or your local Scheepjes Stockist.

Scheepjes Whirl is available from Wool Warehouse (UK/Int), The Knitting Network (UK), Jimmy Beans Wool (USA)Caro’s Atelier (NL/EU), or your favorite Scheepjes stockist.

The Bullfinch Blanket is made from mitered squares in either a crochet version or a knitted version. Both versions showcase the beautiful color changes of the yarn where the squares are arranged in such a way that the color changes diagonally over the blanket. The squares are joined as you go, so no assembly at the end. Finally, after making 100+ squares, the blanket is finished with a bold border.

Written Patterns

The written patterns for the knit and crochet version of the blanket are available on Scheepjes.com and in the Scheepjes Dutch (Nederlands) language or English language Facebook groups. The written patterns are available in English (US & UK Terms), Dutch (Nederlands), and German.

Extra Support

The Bullfinch Blanket is hosted in the Scheepjes Facebook groups. If you are not part of these groups, feel free to join either the Dutch (Nederlands) language group or English language (International) group. These groups are also the perfect place to show your work or ask any questions you might have. The admin team is there to help.
