Joy’s Cushion – Continuous Crochet Square video tutorial

I would love to show you a neat way to use variegated yarn to make a quick gift or decorate you house with a lovely continuous crochet square cushion. After all, you can never have too many cushions. My cushion is based on the pattern Joy’s Journey by Dedri Uys and uses Scheepjes Noorse Sokkenwol Color.

Materials

You will need 2 balls of Scheepjes Noorse Sokkenwol Color. I used two colors, one for each side of the cushion, giving a fun two-sided look. I used colors 951 and 967 plus a 4.5mm hook. In addition to the yarn, you will also need a 45cm x 45cm cushion inner.

Scheepjes Noorse Sokkenwol Color

Scheepjes Noorse Sokkenwol Color is available from Wool Warehouse, Deramores or your Scheepjes stockist. Thank you for using the links on my blog, supporting my work and helping me to keep my work available for free.

Gauge and size

Gauge is not essential for this project and it’s not needed to make a gauge swatch. If your gauge is similar to mine you will be able to make a 45cm x 45cm cushion.

If you would like to make a cushion or blanket of your own using Dedri’s pattern, I have a short video tutorial to show you how to make Joy’s Journey.

Joy’s Cushion – Free Crochet Work Description

© Esther Dijkstra 2017. All rights reserved.

To make a cushion do the following:

  1. Make 2 identical continuous squares using the pattern Joy’s Journey till each square is approximately 45cm x 45cm.
  2. Work away the yarn tails of both squares.
  3. Place the two squares with their backs to each-other. Using one of the yarn colors used to make the squares, join 3 edges with single crochet stitches. In the corners work 3 single crochet stitches.
  4. Put the cushion inner inside the joined squares.
  5. Join the final edges of the squares with single crochet stitches.
  6. Work away your last yarn tail.

Yarn packs for Joy’s Journey

If you enjoyed making this pattern you could consider doing a full size blanket with it. It is fabulously relaxing and a wonderful destresser. There are yarn packs available for Joy’s Journey to make a Baby Blanket or a Large Blanket. The yarn packs include yarn, a printed pattern and a pom-pom ribbon to make the border.

I am really happy with my cushion and my boys love it too. My eldest said it was the softest cushion he has ever laid his head on. Gotta love that yarn!

Tunisian Crochet Ten Stitch afgan video tutorial

In the summer of 2015, this sounds soooo long ago, I started working on two Tunisian Crochet Ten Stitch projects designed by Dedri Uys. Dedri has the design for a full size afgan, but I made two cushion using Scheepjes Stone Washed and Stone Washed XL yarn. Time to show you the end result.

If one of your New Year resolutions is to make a serious dent in your yarn stash, this is THE project for you. You can use any yarn you like and in any color combination too. I however am not that good at New Year resolutions, I used this project as a good excuse to add to my stash (so don’t be like me 😀 ). The people at Scheepjes send me a whole box of Stone Washed XL (available from Deramores (Int & UK), Paradise Fibers (US & CA)). Using the Stone Washed XL I show you step-by-step how to make the Tunisian Crochet Ten Stitch Afgan.

I have made two versions of the design, one using the ‘regular’ Stone Washed and one using Stone Washed XL. The difference the two is that the ‘regular’ yarn is thinner; hence the end result is more subtle. The XL yarn on the other hand makes a much bolder statement!

I hope you enjoy working on this afgan. It is seriously relaxing and a perfect stash-buster.

Stone Washed & Stone Washed XL

Do you remember when it was summer and you were sitting in the sun thinking there is nothing better than warm sunshine on your skin? This is the memory I have of my first time working with Scheepjes Stone Washed and Stone Washed XL yarn.

I have read so much about this yarn, there are so many people raving about it all the time, that I jumped on the opportunity to use it when Dedri Uys asked me to make a video tutorial of her Tunisian Crochet Ten Stitch afgan, a stash busting project if ever there was one!

But I did not want to bust my stash, I wanted a good excuse to add to it. The ever so kind people at Scheepjes send me a whole box of Stone Washed XL (also available from Deramores (INT & UK), Paradise Fibers (US & CA). I just never tire of the excitement I feel when opening a box of yarn.

Both Stone Washed and Stone Washed XL yarns are incredibly soft and really fun to work with. From now on the Stone Washed XL is in my top 10 best yarns ever. It is soft and yet rugged at the same time. Perfect for the not-so-girly-girl projects, you know cool projects for cool people 🙂

I have been working on two versions of the Tunisian Crochet Ten Stitch afgan design, one using the ‘regular’ Stone Washed yarn, and one using the XL yarn. Here I was working on my ‘regular’ version on one of those warm summer days….

Be sure to come back for the video showing how to make this fun project.

Circles of the Sun completed

completed circles of the sunIt is Friday again and today is the last day of the Circles of the Sun Overlay crochet along. It is a happy day to finish our design and a sad day because our project is finished. I really hope you enjoyed working on it as much as I did.

In the final video I show you how to join the grannies we have been making over the past nine weeks. You can find all the videos on the Circles of the Sun video page. I also have a color chart available for all the color choices I made using Scheepjes Cotton 8.

I have not completed my cushion just yet, time is an issue, but to give you an idea what the final cushion will look like I placed it on the back of a cushion on my couch. Looks nice doesn’t it 😀

I have bought myself a floral fabric for making the back of the cushion. If you would like a felt fabric for your cushion, Minerva Crafts has 50% off all new new patterned felt fabrics from September 1st running for the entire month. (Use the coupon code FELT30). Here is my fabric, I really love the simplicity of the design which means that if I want a little less color, I can just turn my cushion around.

I hope you enjoyed doing overlay crochet and that you learned something new during this CAL. I also hope to see you again for a new project.
