These flags make me happy, I have them hanging in my stall when I am at a fair and I always get compliments about how nice they looks. So, time to share the pattern with you! With this pattern you can make a bunting with no less than 12 flags and 5m long. Look how nice it looks in my stall.

These flags are very suitable for beginners or children who would like to learn to crochet. The English instruction videos are for both left and right handed crafters, should you need the extra support.
HET PATROON IS OOK IN HET NEDERLANDS BESCHIKBAAR.

Video tutorials
There are right and left handed video tutorials available. The videos are available on my YouTube channel for left handed and right handed crafters.
Color placement
Each flag is a combination of Color A, B, and C as explained below. Crochet 4 flags of each color combination, for a total of 12 flags.
Round | Flag 1 | Flag 2 | Flag 3 |
---|---|---|---|
1 | A | B | C |
2 | A | B | C |
3 | B | C | A |
4 | B | C | A |
5 | C | A | B |
6 | C | A | B |
7 | D | D | D |
Suggestion: you can also choose to crochet the flags in one color with a border. Then crochet Rounds 1 to 6 in the same color.
Abbreviations
This pattern uses US crochet terminology.
ss slip stitch
ch chain
ch-sp chain space
sc single crochet
dc double crochet
st stitch(es)
Good to know before you start
Each flag has 3 colors, and is a combination of Color A, B, and C. Color D is used for the last round of the flags and to crochet the flags into a long garland.
First crochet all the flags from Rounds 1 to 7, Round 8 is crocheted last.
The instructions between { } must be repeated the given number of times.
The instructions between ( ) must all be crocheted into the same chain space.
The information between [ ] is the total number of stitches for the round and helps you check if you accidentally made a mistake.

Pattern
Feel free to replace the starting chain in round 1 with a magic ring.
Round 1 With the color indicated, ch4, join with a ss in first ch to form a ring. Ch3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 2dc in ring, ch4, {3dc in ring, ch4} twice, join with ss in third beginning ch.
[3 ch4-sp, 9 dc]
Round 2 Continue with same color, ch3, 1dc in next 2 sts, {(3dc, ch4, 3dc) in ch-4 sp, 1dc in next 3 sts} twice, (3dc, ch4, 3dc) in ch-4 sp, join with ss in 3rd beginning ch. Fasten off.
[3 ch4-sp, 27 dc]
Round 3 Join new color in any ch4-sp with a ss, ch3, (2dc, ch4, 3dc) in same ch4-sp, {1dc in next 9 sts, (3dc, ch4, 3dc) in ch4-sp} twice, 1dc in next 9 sts, join with ss in third beginning ch.
[3 ch4-sp, 45 dc]
Round 4 Continue with same color, ch3, 1dc in next 2 sts, {(3dc, ch4, 3dc) in ch4-sp, 1dc in next 15 sts} twice, (3dc, ch4, 3dc) in ch4-sp, 1dc in next 12 sts, join with ss in 3rd beginning ch. Fasten off.
[3 ch4-sp, 63 dc]
Round 5 Join new color in any ch4-sp with ss, ch3, (2dc, ch4, 3dc) in same ch4-sp, {1dc in next 21 sts, (3dc, ch4, 3dc) in ch4-sp} twice, 1dc in next 21 sts, join with ss in third beginning ch.
[3 ch4-sp, 81 dc]
Round 6 Continue with same color, ch3, 1dc in next 2 sts, {(3dc, ch4, 3dc) in ch4-sp, 1dc in next 27 sts} twice, (3dc, ch4, 3dc) in ch4-sp, 1dc in next 24 sts, join with sl st in 3rd beginning ch. Fasten off.
[3 ch4-sp, 99 dc]
Round 7 Join Color D in any ch-4 sp with sl st, ch3, (2dc, ch4, 3dc) in same ch4-sp, {1dc in next 33 sts, (3dc, ch4, 3dc) in ch4-sp} twice, 1dc in next 33 sts, join with ss in third beginning ch. Fasten off.
[3 ch4-sp, 117 dc]
Blocking
Crochet all 12 flags as indicated in the color chart and weave in all ends. Block the flags before you crochet them together, this will make the bunting much nicer. Block the flags by wetting them and then pinning them down on for example a cushion. Let them dry before removing the pins. The flags will keep their shape and will be nice and straight, ready for the next step. All flags are now approximately 17cm.
Tip: in this video I show how I block motifs.
Round 8 Crocheting the flags into a bunting
Crochet the flags together in random order. We do this by crocheting over 2 sides of each flag with a loose chain between the flags. With Color D, work ch50, repeat {pick up a flag and crochet 2sc in any ch4-sp, 1sc in next 39 sts, 5sc in ch4-sp, 1sc in next 39 sts, 2sc in ch4-sp, 50L} 12 times.
You now have a long chain with flags attached to it, but the chain is still quite unstable. So we are going to crochet another row of sc across the entire length of the chain. Ch1 to turn, sc in each of the next 50 ch, repeat {3sc in ch4-sp of next flag, 1sc in next 39 sts across top of flag, 3sc in next ch4-sp, 1sc in next 50 ch} 12 times. Fasten off. Weave in ends. Flags are now approximately 18cm.
