French Garden Square – Free Crochet Pattern

I started this design back in 2017(!), I found the date in my original notes. Sometimes things just end up on the back burner for way too long. I originally wanted to make this square into a blanket, but that just isn’t going to happen anymore and that is okay. All things come to and end and this is the second of my final five designs I am sharing with you before I retire from crochet designing.

My French Garden Square is a mindful square that you can leave as it is, or grow into a blanket, or combine with other squares, or do any number of creative things with. In this post I give suggestions on how to turn the square into a blanket. You will also find information about yarn details, the free pattern and the free video tutorial.

Materials

The square as shown uses Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn, but you can easily make this square in any yarn you like. I made the square from left-over yarn from my stash. I used about half a ball of each color.

The sample shown uses Scheepjes Stone Washed (78% Cotton, 22% Acrylic, 50g/130m) in the following colors:

  • Color A : Moonstone (801)
  • Color B : Rose Quartz (820)
  • Color C: Rhodochrosite (835)
  • Color D: Deep Amethyst (811)
  • Color E: Canada Jade (806)
  • Color F: Green Agate (815)

You will need a 3.5mm crochet hook and a stitch markers.

You can buy Scheepjes Stone Washed from Amazon.co.uk (UK), Wool Warehouse (UK), Jimmy Bean Wools (USA), Love Crafts (USA), The Knitting Network (UK), Caro’s Atelier (NL/EU), or your local Scheepjes Stockist.

Size

The final size of the square is 35cm.

Finishing

Work away all yarn tails and block to given measurements. The square will wobble a little and blocking will remove the wobble and give you nice straight edges.

Tips for making a blanket

You can use the French Garden square to make a blanket. Here are a few ways that you can do this.

  1. Make 16 squares and join them 4 x 4 to make a square blanket of approximately 140cm square.
  2. Make 20 squares and join them 4 x 5 to make a rectangular blanket of approximately 140cm x 175cm.
  3. Make a square blanket by repeating Rounds 15 – 19 till the blanket is the size you want it to be. Then finish with Round 25.
