Choose which mandalas you want to make

It is possible to make up to 39 different mandalas by combining the 9 patterns from my Mix and Match Mandalas book.

You can make any of the three small mandalas by following the patterns provided. Once finished, you’ll complete your mandala by attaching it to a 15cm ring, giving it a beautiful, polished look.

To make a medium sized mandala, choose any one of the three small designs, but instead of attaching it to a ring, let it grow by adding one of the three medium patterns. The magic happens when you mix and match: combine Small Mandala I with Medium Mandala II for one look, or try Small Mandala I with Medium Mandala III for something completely different. In total, you can create 9 combinations! Complete your mandala by attaching it to a 25cm ring.

To create a large mandala, start with a medium one by combining a small design with a medium pattern. Once your medium mandala is ready, choose one of the three large mandala designs to complete the look. Mixing small, medium and large patterns gives you the power to create 27, one-of-a-kind combinations. Finally, finish by attaching your large mandala to a 40cm ring.

Altogether, the book offers 39 possible mandala combinations, each one an opportunity to explore color, shape, and creativity in your own way.

Choose your colors & yarn amount

Choosing colors is difficult sometimes, but to help you along a bit, here are some general tips

  • Choose 5 to 6 colors per mandala, this usually results in a nicely balanced look
  • Choose at least one neutral color, use it throughout the mandalas to bring balance
  • Choose colors with the same brightness lever, for example all pastels or all bright rainbow
  • Choose colors you like!

I made all my mandalas using Scheepjes Catona (50g/125m) which is a mercerized sport weight cotton yarn. You can however use any yarn available to you. The amount of yarn you’ll need depends on your color choices, the number of mandalas you plan to make and which of the 39 designs you select.

The small mandalas require approximately 17g of yarn plus an additional 3g to attach them to the ring. Medium mandalas need 40g – 46g of yarn plus 5g for attaching to the ring, while large mandalas use 88g – 111g of yarn, with an extra 8g for attaching to the ring.

Scheepjes Catona is available from Amazon.co.uk, Wool Warehouse (UK), Jimmy Beans Wool (USA), The Knitting Network (UK), Love Crafts (USA / UK), Caro’s Atelier (NL / EU), and many other Scheepjes stockists.

Good to know before you start

Before you get started, here are a few helpful tips:

  • The English video tutorials are in US crochet terminology.
  • All rounds are made with the right side of your work facing.
  • Sometimes the starting chain counts as a stitch and sometimes it doesn’t, each round will clearly tell you which is the case.

Gauge

Gauge is really important because the mandalas need to fit in the ring. If they are too big or too small for the rings, they will not look pretty or it might even be impossible to get them into the rings.

It’s important that each mandala is about 10% smaller than the ring it will be fitted into. Ideally, the small mandala should measure 13cm before attaching it to a 15cm ring. Similarly, the medium mandala should be 22cm before fitting into a 25cm ring and the large mandala should be 36cm before attaching it to a 40cm ring.

If your mandala turns out larger than it should be, you can replace a round that contains only double crochet stitches with a round of half double crochet stitches to make your mandala smaller. Likewise, if your mandala is too small replace a round of double crochet stitches with treble crochet stitches to make it larger.

Join any of the mandalas to the ring

All mandalas are joined to their ring in the same way. I have a right handed and left handed video showing how I join the mandala to the ring. In the video I show a small mandala, but it is the same for the medium and large mandalas also.

TIP: It’s hard work to attach the large mandala in the 40cm ring. Do this over several crafting sessions, this is better for your hands!

Ik heb de video voor hoe je de mandala in de ring bevestigd ook in het Nederlands. Hierbij de Nederlandstalige video’s voor rechtshandige en linkshandige makers.
