Jacqueline’s Hopscotch Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern

Time for a new design using the lovely Symfonie Terra yarn! Jacqueline’s Hopscotch Scarf is the first of the final five designs that I am publishing before I retire from crochet designing. It’s a relaxing design, easy on the mind, and wonderful to wear.

I had a few goals in mind when I designed Jacqueline’s Hopscotch Scarf. First of all it has to use only TWO skeins of (sock)yarn. I know many of you have random skeins of yarn in your stash, and I want to encourage you to use them. I designed the scarf using two matching colors, one solid and one variegated. But honestly, any color combo that has your fancy is totally great.

Secondly, I wanted a pattern that I could work on during a yarn show. This means something that is easy to pick up at a random moment, and just as easy to put away and still know where you are in the pattern. I was working on this scarf during many shows (there’s not always a lot of time available to work on a project during a show, but there are always quiet moments at the beginning and end of the day), and many were in love with the feel of the fabric, and also Jacqueline. She bought the yarn I used in the scarf and was totally okay with getting only a draft version of the pattern. It was still far away from being completed. I descided to name the scarf after her, she was so enthusiastic!

In this post you find all information about my the scarf, including yarn details, the free pattern and free video tutorial.

Materials

The scarf uses two 100g skeins of fingering weight sock yarn in two different colors. One color is variegated and the other is a matching solid shade. You can use any yarn you have available to you, for example use two of those beautiful fingering weight (sockyarn) skeins you have in your stash that you bought just because they were pretty.

The sample shown uses Symfonie Terra (75% Merino, 25% Nylon, 100g/400m) in the following colors:

  • 1 x Color A : VR2002 Party Lights (variegated color)
  • 1 x Color B : SS2007 Sunset (solid color)

You will need a 3.5mm crochet hook, and possibly a stitch marker.

Size

The final size, when blocked, is 20cm x 185cm.

This pattern uses US Crochet Terminology.

Good to know before you start

There is no right and wrong side. The RS and WS are simply indicated to help you know which part of the pattern you are on. Place a stitch marker on the right side of the shawl to help you distinguish between the two sides.

Gauge is not critical, just work as many rows are you can in section B to get a nice long scarf.

Leave the yarn attached when changing colors. Carry the yarn up along the edge of the scarf and change between the two colors every second row.

You can use a different weight yarn that given in this pattern, simply follow the pattern and work more (or less) rows in Section A till you have the required width (20cm). Then work Section B till you have a nice long scarf, and complete with Section C.

[6 sc, 3 ch1-sp]

Row 8 [RS] Ch1, 2sc in first st, *ch1, skip next st, 1sc in ch1-sp; repeat from * till 2 sts left, ch1, skip next st, 1sc in last st. Turn.

Row 9 [WS] Ch1, 1sc in first st, *1sc in next ch1-sp, ch1, skip next st; repeat from * till one st left, 2sc in last st, change color. Turn.

Repeat Rows 8 and 9, 26 times till the stitch count is [30 ch1-sps, 33 sc].

The scarf is now 20cm wide on the working edge and weighs +/- 16g. You will finish with Color B on your hook, ready to start the next section.

Section B

From this point on the scarf will no longer become wider, only longer. In section B we will lengthen the scarf and keep the width constant.

Row 1 [RS] Ch1, 1sc in first st, *ch1, skip next st, 1sc in ch1-sp; repeat from * till 2 sts left, ch1, skip next st, 1sc in last st. Turn.
[31 ch1-sps, 32 sc]

Row 2 [WS] Ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in next ch1-sp, *ch1, skip next st, 1sc in next ch1-sp; repeat from * till 1 st left, 1sc in last st, change color. Turn.
[30 ch1-sps, 33 sc]

Repeat Rows 1 and 2, changing between color A and B after each repeat, till you have approximately 20g of yarn left. This is 10g of color A and 10g of color B.

Section C

In this section we will decrease the width of the scarf back to a point.

Row 1 [RS] Ch1, 1sc2tog over first 2 sts, 1sc in next ch1-sp, *ch1, skip next st, 1sc in ch1-sp; repeat from * till 2 sts left, ch1, skip next st, 1sc in last st. Turn.

Row 2 [WS] Ch1, 1sc in first st, 1sc in next ch1-sp, *ch1, skip next st, 1sc in next ch1-sp; repeat from * till 2 sts left, 1sc2tog over last 2 sts, change color. Turn.

Each row decreases the stitch count by one stitch. Repeat Rows 1 and 2, changing between color A and B after each repeat, till you have stitch count [1 sc2tog, 1 sc]. Fasten off.

Finishing

Work away the 4 yarn tails at the beginning and end of the scarf. The working edge of the scarf may be a bit wobbly. Blocking your scarf will take away the wobble. To block your scarf, wet your scarf with water and a bit of Eucalan wool wash (optional), squeeze out excess water and pin the scarf to the given measurements.
