Mix and Match Mandalas concept
My book includes 9 mandala patterns, organized into 3 sizes: small, medium and large. You can make any of the three small mandalas by following the patterns provided. Once finished, you’ll complete your mandala by attaching it to a 15cm ring.
To make any of the medium mandalas, start with one of the small mandalas, but in stead of attaching it to the ring, let it grow further. You can combine the small and medium patterns to make 9 different mandalas which are then attached to a 25cm ring.
Likewise, the large mandalas are made by starting from a medium mandala design. Combining the small, medium and large patterns results in 27 different combinations that are attached to a 40cm ring.
Adding all the possibilities makes for a total of 39 mandalas! Which combinations are you going to make?
Yarn amounts
All mandalas are made using Scheepjes Catona (50g/125m) which is a mercerized sport weight cotton yarn. The yarn comes in over 100 different colors; so many color combinations to choose from! I made my mandalas from the following colors.
- Color A : 130 Old Lace
- Color B : 246 Icy Pink
- Color C : 226 Light Orchid
- Color D : 282 Ultraviolet
- Color E : 205 Kiwi
- Color F : 208 Yellow Gold
- Color G : 114 Shocking Pink
- Color H : 397 Cyan
- Color I : 146 Vivid Blue
The amount of yarn you’ll need depends on your color choices, the number of mandalas you plan to create and which of the 39 designs you select. For detailed yarn requirements, refer to the table on page 14 of my book which gives yarn amounts per round for each mandala. As a general guideline, one ball of each color and two balls of Color A should be more than sufficient to get you started.
Scheepjes Catona is available from Amazon.co.uk, Wool Warehouse (UK), Jimmy Beans Wool (USA), The Knitting Network (UK), Love Crafts (USA / UK), Caro’s Atelier (NL / EU), and many other Scheepjes stockists.
Color placement
You can make these mandalas in any color combination you love. I have used the 10 colors above for all the mandalas in my book. If you would like to know which colors I used where for each of the mandalas, you can find the color breakdown per round in THIS DOCUMENT.

How to attach any of the mandalas to the ring
All mandalas are attached to their rings using the same method. It’s important that each mandala is about 10% smaller than the ring it will be fitted into. Ideally, the small mandala should measure 13cm before attaching it to a 15cm ring. Similarly, the medium mandala should be 22cm before fitting into a 25cm ring and the large mandala should be 36cm before attaching it to a 40cm ring. The following video tutorials for left handed and right handed crafters show how to attach the mandala to the ring.
Small Mandalas
Each of the small mandala patterns can be made on their own. After completing the rounds for the mandala, attach it to a 15cm ring.
