Nuts about Squares CAL – Week 8

We are at week 8 of Nuts about Squares CAL and this week you have not one but TWO fabulous squares to make. We are still making only 3 squares but we have 2 designs this week. First we make TWO Cat’s Claw squares designed by Margaret McInnes; a fun and interesting square with long front post stitches. We finish this week by making ONE Tropical Delight square designed by Susan Stevens. Topical Delight is possibly the most challenging square of the CAL.

I have kits available for all three Nuts About Squares Colorways in my SHOP HERE. Choose between Nuts About Squares – EARTH in Scheepjes Stone Washed, Nuts About Squares – SEA in Scheepjes Colour Crafter, and Nuts About Squares – SKY in Scheepjes Sunkissed.

I have a detailed post with all the yarn information, amounts, weights and color combinations for the 3 colorways, you can find the yarn/color information HERE.

Color chart

The colors for each row are given in the Color Chart Week 8 for each of the three colorways or you can follow the general colorway in the table below.

Instructions Nuts about Squares week 8

Cat’s Claw by Margaret McInnes

Use the following hook sizes to make your Cat’s Claw squares or the hook size you need to get the correct size:

  • Color Crafter – 4.0mm
  • Stone Washed – 3.5mm
  • Sunkissed – 3.0mm

Note: It could happen that your Cat’s Claw square turns out smaller because of the way the long front post stitches pull the square inwards. If this happens, feel free to go up a hook size.

Work Rounds 1 to 11 of Cat’s Claw according to the written pattern or video tutorial using the colorway for week 8 given above. Work 2 squares in total.

At this point you have 37 stitches per side counting between the center corner stitches. Work an extra round to bring the final stitch count to 44 stitches per side.Round 12 using color A, attach yarn with a standing hdc or ch2 in any corner st, 1hdc in same st, ch2, and 2hdc in same corner st. This is your new corner made. *skip first st, 2hdc in next st, 1hdc in next st, 2hdc in next st, 1hdc in next 29 st, 2hdc in next st, 1hdc in next st, 2hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st, (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in next corner st. Repeat from * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the final repeat. Join to the first st with a ss. [44 hdc per side]

Repeat Round 12 for the second square. Round 12 is also shown in THIS VIDEO.

Tropical Delight by Susan Stevens

Use the following hook sizes to make your Tropical Delight square or the hook size you need to get the correct size:

  • Color Crafter – 4.5mm
  • Stone Washed – 4.0mm
  • Sunkissed – 3.5mm

This is 0.5mm larger than the hook size you used for week 1. We found during testing that Tropical Delight turns out a bit smaller, going up a hook size fixed it for my testers.

Work Rounds 1 to 14 of Tropical Delight according to the written pattern or video tutorial using the colorway for week 8 given above. Work only 1 square!

At this point you have 37 stitches per side counting between the center corner stitches. Work an extra round to bring the final stitch count to 44 stitches per side.Round 15 using color A, repeat Round 12 of Cat’s Claw but work in a ch-2 corner space and not a corner stitch. [44 hdc per side]

Block all your squares to the following sizes:

  • Color Crafter – 25cm (10in)
  • Stone Washed – 22cm (9in)
  • Sunkissed – 20cm (7.5in)

Just a note, if Tropical Delight is not your cup of tea, feel free to make 3 Cat’s Claw squares. You can choose your own color placement if you decide to make 3 Cat’s Claw squares.

Nederlandse Instructies (Dutch) voor Nuts about Squares week 8

Maak in totaal 2 vierkantjes.

*Sla de eerste steek over, 2hst in volgende steek, 1hst in volgende steek, 2hst in volgende steek, 1hst in volgende 29 steken, 2hst in volgende steek, 1hst in volgende steek, 2hst in volgende steek, 1hst in volgende steek, (2hst, 2l, 2hst) in volgende v-hoeksteek.

Video tutorials

If you appreciate a visual support to the pattern, you can follow the video for Tropical Delight and Cat’s Claw. These videos shows you how to make the original square.

After you have completed the original pattern you need to add an extra round using Color A to bring your total stitch count to 44 stitches. I also show you how to do this in a short video.

Share your squares

When you have completed Tropical Delight you should treat yourself big time! I hope you enjoy making the 3 squares for this week; my pile of squares is growing steadily each week. If you would like to share your work you can do so in the Official CCC Social Group on Facebook, share it on my Facebook page or tag me in your post on Instagram. If you use the hastag #NutsAboutSquares it will help me find it.

I hope to see all of you next week for part 9 of Nuts about Squares CAL.

With love,
Esther

  2. Thank you for putting this all together. I’m only at Week four – “Le Vesinet”, but I’m loving them all and can’t wait to get to the Tropical Delight square. I’m a “beginner”, but your videos have been terrific and I’m always up for a challenge!

  3. could you make photos of Squares CAL – Week 8 in stone washed version, please?

  5. Tropical square – do we change colour for round 3? The colour chart indicates we do but you don’t in the video. Many thanks

  6. Just want to thank you so much for this beautiful CAL, it is the first one I have ever been participating in. And your videos are SO helpful, I would never ever had managed the tropical delight without your help!! And it was well worth the effort, for sure, such a beautiful square! Thank you again, I’m counting the days to the next release of a new square!

  7. Tremendously helpful. Its been an year since i am sewing, so far i have tried small items, but i think i can try this as my next project because your videos are so helpful that even a starter can start with the help of the videos. Goog going. I will be sharing these post and videos with my friend who takes sewing classes with me..

  8. Would it be possible for you to indicate the approximate diameter of the Tropical Delights motif after round 2 and after round 5 with colour crafter, 4.5mm hook. (Mine is 8cm after round 2, and 12.5cm after round 5).I don’t want to get too far before I discover I need a different hook size – this pattern is far too complicated to have to unpick and start again!

  9. Just a shout out to all the wonderful designers who made such beautiful squares that you are incorporating into this CAL. Thank you for choosing such lovely patterns with such varied techniques! This is so much fun to work on and like others, I get so excited when a new square comes out! Absolutely loving this!

    1. I didn’t measure it by round when i made it, and now that the blanket is complete it is not reliable to measure anymore because the square is blocked and pulled open. If it turns out too small or large, adjust the hight of the last round or two

  10. Hi Esther, I have a little! problem. I’m on round 10 and my square is just 15 cm… wath shuld I do, bigger neadel or what, my crothet is not at loos as yours. I’m using colour crafter

    1. Is this your first square? You want all your squares to be the same size.
Of this is your first square, I would suggest going up a hook size or maybe even two. Your fabric will feel softer with a larger hook.
Of it is just this one square that is smaller than the others you could addapt the last round or two with taller stitches to get your size up.

      1. this is my first in this jarn, hav emade all in smaller sice 15 cm 2,5 mm hock. Now I started again with a sice 4,5 hock and after 8 round its across 15 cm from before 13 cm, it’s the catclaws I’m doing. Can you pleace tell me what it should be after 8 round before I do more

      2. so you are using different yarns to make your squares all in one blanket? Then it is very hard for me to give you advice on hook size because it is going to be different for each square. Not sure I understand you correctly.
I think your question is how to get all your squares to 15cm and your cat’s claw square is turning out larger that your other squares, right? If that is the case then I would suggest to drop a hook size to get the square to the same size as your other squares.
What you are aiming for is for all your squares to be the same size, and that you have 44 stitches in the final round.

      3. Third time lucky. With a 5 mm needle, it becomes 25 cm after the last lap of color A

      4. Sorry if it became confusing but no, have done all 12 weeks in a thinner yarn and 2.5 mm needle and now I have purchased Scheepje’s color crafter so I can make a real blanket instead of the little I’ve done. I do not mix different varieties of yarn

  11. Hi,

I know I’m late, but I can’t get the written pattern for Tropical Delight with given the link

    Can you help?

    Thanks

    Pascale Perron

    1. I see that the website of the designer is down. There is nothing I can do about that I’m afraid. I am not responsible for the designer’s blog. I suggest checking back later, to see if it is back up.
As an alternative I can offer you the video tutorial. You could consider working along with that?

Laat me even weten of het lukt.
