Vanishing Stripes Baby Blanket – Free Crochet Pattern

The Vanishing Stripes Baby Blanket has been designed as a leftover yarn project for the Enigma Blanket, but it is suitable for any leftover or random yarn you might have. The pattern is written in a generic way so you can easily adapt it to your needs. Voor Nederlands, zie aub DEZE post.

Materials

You will need leftover yarn from other projects. In the sample shown here I use DK weight Scheepjes Scrumptious left over from the Enigma Vintage colorway and also some other Scrumptious yarn I still had available. For DK weight yarn I use a 4.0mm and 4.5mm hook. You can however use any yarn you have available. Just be sure that all the yarn you use has the same yarn weight and that the hook size you use is suitable for the yarn.

You can buy Scheepjes Scrumptious from Wool Warehouse (UK), Jimmy Bean Wools (USA), Love Crafts (USA), Caro’s Atelier (NL/EU), or your local Scheepjes Stockist.

Size

The size of the blanket depends on the yarn used, personal tension and any adaptations to the base chain. For the pattern as written the blanket is 70cm / 27″ wide and expected to be 100cm / 40″ long (sample blanket not finished yet).

PREPARATION

For this blanket you can use as many or as few colors as you like. Weight the yarn you have and order it from most to least. The blanket starts with the color of which you have the most, and when you run out of that color, attach the color you have the second most of. This continues till you have used up all the colors. You will finish with the color you have the least of. This way you make stripes that become thinner and thinner until they vanish so to speak.

I used 7 colors of Scheepjes Scrumptious yarn for my blanket. Here my yarn amounts and my maths because I had several half balls of the colors available. I have ordered the colors from most to least and this is also the order that I will be using them in.

  • Honeydew Melon Sorbet (317) : 88g + 29g = 117g
  • Balkava (325) : 82g + 30g = 112g
  • Key Lime Pie (337) : 84g + 23g = 107g
  • Mint Whoopie Pie (340) : 29g +25g = 54g
  • Black Forest Gateau (313) : 44g
  • Turkish Delight (331) : 20g + 20g = 40g
  • Buttercream Icing (302) : 19g + 19g = 38g

PATTERN

If you want to make the blanket wider or more narrow, simply add more or less chains to start.

Row 1 (WS) With 4.5mm hook ch121. Change to 4.0mm hook and start in second chain from hook, 1sc in each ch to end. Turn. [120 sc]

Row 2 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as a stitch, here and further), 1sc in each stitch to end. Turn. [120 sc]

Row 3 and further Repeat Row 2 till the yarn runs out. Fasten off at the end of a WS row, pull out your last row if needed. By always starting a new color on a RS facing row, the pattern will look nicer. Attach a new color in the first stitch with a slip stitch and continue with Row 2 repeat.

Finishing Work away all yarn tails and block the edges of the blanket straight.

“Finished” result

At this point the blanket is still a WIP, but here you see the first stipe completed. When I have completed more of the blanket, I will post a few update photos. Perhaps you finish yours before I finish mine, please share your work to inspire me to finish also.
