Origin of Trinity Mandalas
Have you ever been challenged to do something, and then were amazed at what you did? This is what happened to me with these mandalas. Dedri from Look at what I made set me a challenge, she said take 10 random colors and design a mandala. She also said that if I work more than 4 rounds without having to chart it out or frog, that I should rip those rounds back and start again. She also told me to change colors every round, or two rounds max, to allow for maximum freedom in color placement. Quite a challenge, and the result is the 3 mandalas you find in this pattern. Dedri gave me a lot of feedback during the design process, and I am most grateful to her for her help.
Materials
You will need 10 colors of Scheepjes Catona (50g/125m) yarn and 3 mandala rings to make the Trinity Mandalas. These are the colors for the original Rainbow colorway.
- 1 x A – 130 Old Lace
- 1 x B – 403 Lemonade
- 1 x C – 208 Yellow Gold
- 1 x D – 205 Kiwi Green
- 1 x E – 246 Icy Pink
- 1 x F – 398 Colonial Rose
- 1 x G – 413 Cherry Pink
- 1 x H – 397 Cyan Blue
- 1 x I – 400 Petrol Blue
- 1 x J – 110 Jet Black
You will also need 3 rings to finish the mandalas. You will need rings with diameter 50cm (19″ or 20″), 30cm (12″) and 15cm (6″). We make the mandalas using a 3mm crochet hook.
I have yarn kits available for my Trinity Mandalas in my shop. The mandala kits include everything you need to make these mandalas including the printed pattern, yarn and the mandala rings. I ship internationally!
Scheepjes Catona is available from Wool Warehouse (UK), Jimmy Beans Wool (USA), The Knitting Network (UK), Love Crafts (USA / UK), Caro’s Atelier (NL / EU), and many other Scheepjes stockists.
Patterns
The pattern for Trinity Mandalas is divided into 3 parts; in part 1 you make the small mandala, in part 2 you grow the small mandala to become the medium mandala, and in part 3 you grow the medium mandala to become the large mandala.
The free, written patterns are available in English US Terms, English UK Terms, Dutch, and Swedish as separate pdf files from the following links:
Video tutorials
There will be free video tutorials available to help you every step of the way. I will release these videos on my YouTube channel when I release the free patterns. The video’s are only available in English US Terms. I hope the videos make it possible for everyone to make these mandalas.
Gauge
The mandalas are designed to be approximately 10% smaller than the rings they go into. This means the small mandala is 14cm before it goes into the 15cm ring, the medium mandala is 27cm before it goes into the 30cm ring, and the large mandala is 45cm before it goes into the 50cm ring. The 10% difference is important, because the mandalas need to be stretched out when placed in the ring to ensure that they can support their own weight. If they are too large, they will be floppy and droopy when placed in the rings.
If you find that your mandalas are too big, you are most likely lifting your stitches higher than I am. I suggest you look at THIS VIDEO about the golden loop. If you are a so-called lifter, your stitches will be higher than average, and going down a hook size will not make any difference. I suggest that you try to pull your yarn back to make your stitches shorter.
Trinity Mandalas – Time Traveler
I have made a new colorway for my Trinity Mandalas, and named it Time Traveler. Find the colors I used for this new colorway HERE. I also have kits available for this new colorway in my SHOP.
- 1 x A – 248 Champagne
- 1 x B – 222 Tulip
- 1 x C – 261 Capri Blue
- 1 x D – 399 Lilac Mist
- 1 x E – 401 Dark Teal
- 1 x F – 393 Charcoal
- 1 x G – 394 Shadow Purple
- 1 x H – 226 Light Orchid
- 1 x I – 253 Tropic
- 1 x J – 110 Jet Black
Support
We will make these 3 mandalas during a short 3-week make along. The project will be hosted by Scheepjes in their English and Dutch Facebook groups. You can join these groups if you need any help, or want to share your work. I will be in the groups as much as possible to help you with any questions you might have, and to admire your beautiful mandala’s.

I am looking forward to this CAL. I never made a mandala but with your support and that of the group, I feel confident that can successfully make this project, Thank you ?
Hi,
Is it possible to do the mandalas without the mandala rings? Thanks
Sure, just block them rigourously
I live in California and have searched everywhere for a 20″ (50cm) ring with our success. Do you know of a store in the UK or EU that might have them and ship to the US?
I saw some on Amazon a few days ago, maybe check there?
Thank you, I checked and they did not have the 20 ” size. What I did find was that lamp shade suppliers sell all sizes of rings… so I bought those!
Its most likely the same rings anyway, just given a different name. Now you are all set!
What was the name of the lampshade supplier? Very interested! Tia!
I live in Canada and searched for hours to find a 20” ring. I had no luck even on Amazon or Etsy. The closest I got was 18” which is too small. The 6” and 12” rings are golden, will it matter for the project? I could not find any silver or black ones. Thank you.
No, color does not matter. I found 19 inch on Amazon. The pattern is such that you could omit the last few rounds, and then it should be fine
Hi Esther! I am going to follow along and make the Trinity Mandalas. I am wondering what we are going to wrap the hoops with. Are we using some of the yarn or do you have something else in mind? I am eager to get started!
Thank you – Joanne
we will attach the mandalas to the hoops with crochet stitches
We don’t need to wrap the hoops before attaching the mandalas? That saves a lot of work and yarn YAY!!!
Nope, we work straight over the hoops
These are lovely. Ready to start.
Hoi Esther, Ik heb de download gekocht op Raverly maar ik krijg alleen het Mandela Intro File……klopt dit?
Dat klopt. Op 4 april krijg je een update met daarin het hele patroon in het Nederlands.
The shop is out of the color lemonade. Can I replace it by primrose? Other suggestion? Thank you ?
Lemonade is a bit lighter than primrose, but sure, you can make any color combination you like. You dont have to use my colors
I know but I love your colors. Primrose may take away from the background. Old rose may compliment the background better.
These look very pretty But how difficult are they to make?
With the aid of the videos, they should be doable for most
I hope you invite me thank you
I love to crochet along with your videos. Your instructions are so clear and your camera work is excellent for following along. I have crocheted Mandala Madness along with you. Each row was a new pleasure. The creator of the pattern in a crochet genius and how wonderful that you chose to let us crochet along with you. I was born in the Netherlands but live in the USA since age of 7. Your voice and your accent felt so much like home to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I was happy to see the Trinity Mandalas and have made about a dozen in various sizes. They are hanging all over my two slider windows. I love them. Thank you again.
Thank you for your kind words. Good to hear that you enjoy my videos. And so happy to hear that trinity mandalas are decorating your home.
Part one, round 5 – it says to repeat to end omitting final 5 stitches, I’m confused, please help.
That is because the last few stitches of the final repeat are already made before starting the first repeat.
Hoihoi,
Waarom staan op YouTube de Nederlandse versies niet meer?
Groetjes Daniëlle Burger
Er zijn nooit Nederlandse video’s voor Trinity Mandala’s geweest. Ik denk dat je het misschien verwart met een ander project?
Hi Esther, I am so keen to use the mandalas you have designed in a ‘granny square’ type version of a blanket. But as you can imagine there are going to be gaps ?. I’m sure with your genius crochet mind you could perhaps find a solution!! Would love to hear your thoughts.
Regards crochet addict Carol, from South Africa.
PS you videos are brilliant, clear concise and your camera work perfect. Your personal marker is a spot of ingenious!
What you are asking is a complete redesign of the pattern. This is something that I am not able to do for you. You could consider making a lining for your blanket, then you also solve the problem with any holes in the design.
