Enigma Blanket – Free Crochet Pattern

Many of you have been asking me when the Enigma blanket pattern will be available. I will admit, it took me longer than I had wanted, but sometimes things just don’t happen any faster than they are happening. Over the next weeks I will release Enigma Blanket as a 12 part crochet along, and in this post you will find everything regarding yarn amounts, pattern details and video support. Voor Nederlands, zie aub DEZE post.

Origin of Enigma Blanket

I designed my Enigma Blanket for CrochetNow Magazine in 2021 where it was published as a 13 part crochet along. I designed this blanket to be interesting to look at, but without being too daunting for the newbie crafter. The center of the blanket is a mandala, which then changes shape to become first one square and then a second square before finally turning into a rectangle. You can work the full blanket, or stop at any of the intermediate shapes if you feel like it.

Materials

You will need 7 colors to make your Enigma Blanket. I have made 4 official colorways for you, but you are welcome to use any yarn/hook combination your like. The two Flower Field colorways are the original colorways I designed for CrochetNow magazine, Vintage and Sunset Sky are two new colorways that I have designed for the new release of Enigma.

Enigma Blanket Flower Field Colorway in Scheepjes Stone Washed

Enigma Blanket Flower Field Colorway in Scheepjes Stone Washed

Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn is a sport weight cotton acrylic blend (50g/130m, 78% cotton, 22% acrylic). I have used this yarn to make several blankets, and the drape is lovely. The yarn has a cotton core with a fluffy layer, which gives it a unique look and feel.

Enigma Blanket Sunset Sky Colorway in Scheepjes Cotton 8

Enigma Blanket Sunset Sky Colorway in Scheepjes Cotton 8

Scheepjes Cotton 8 is a classic 100% cotton fingering weight yarn and one of my personal favorites. Cotton 8 comes in 50g/170m balls. I LOVE the drape on this yarn and the matt finish gives a natural appearance to any finished item. I enjoy working with cotton as it breaths really well and is hypoallergenic. For the Sunset Sky version I decided to omit the flowers that are on the blanket, but there is enough yarn in the kit to make them if you want to.

Enigma Blanket Vintage Colorway in Scheepjes Scrumptious

Enigma Blanket Vintage on top of Sunset Sky

Scheepjes Scrumptious is a double kit yarn made from recycled polyester fibers mixed with acrylic fibers (100g/300m, 50% recycled polyester / 50% acrylic)). It’s a budget friendly yarn ideal for those looking for ways to reduce waste and reuse materials. I’m using the Vintage colorway to make the video tutorials for Engima.

Size

Yarn, hook size and gauge will affect the size of your blanket. If you work to the gauge specified in the pattern, and you use the yarn weight and hook size given, your blankets will have approximately the following dimensions.

  • The fingering weight blanket using Scheepjes Cotton 8 blanket measures 85cm x 130cm / 34in x 51in.
  • The sport weight blanket using Scheepjes Stone Washed blanket measures 105cm x 155cm / 41in x 61in.
  • The double knit blanket using Scheepjes Colour Crafter or Scheepjes Scrumptious measure 115cm x 170cm / 45in x 67in.

Tips for choosing your own colors

Start by choosing 3 shades that are from the same color, for example 3 shades of pink like in the Flower Field colorway. Arrange the colors from light to dark. The lightest color is Color C, the medium is Color G and the darkest is Color D.

Now choose 3 contrasting colors that work well together and also work with the 3 colors you have already chosen. This second set of 3 colors will give brightness to your blanket and make your blanket interesting to look at. Even though these 3 colors are contrasting, they should be in harmony because they are used together a lot. Now arrange them in an order that if they are used consecutively, they “work”. The first of these 3 colors is Color B, the second is Color F and the third is Color E. Particularly Color E is important because it’s the color that creates the boundaries between the different sections of the blanket and is the color that is used the most.

Now choose a light neutral shade that works with the other colors you have chosen. Usually shades like off-white, ecru, shell, cream or similar colors work well. This neutral color is Color A.

Enigma Blanket Pattern

The pattern for Enigma Blanket is divided into 12 parts. The free, written patterns are available in English US Terms and Dutch. The patterns are available through the following links. These links will be updated as the pattern becomes available.

BONUS Patterns

There is always yarn left at the end of a project. If you use the Stone Washed or Cotton 8 kits, you won’t have too much yarn have left, but with the Color Crafter and Scrumptious kits you do. The balls just don’t work out well. Below is a list of patterns that you can use to use up your leftovers. Some are a little older, but all are ideal for using all your yarn.

Full pattern in one document

The pattern for Enigma Blanket is available for free in 12 parts on my blog. If you prefer to have the pattern as one document, you can purchase the pattern on Ravelry or in my SHOP.

Video tutorials

There will be free video tutorials available to help you every step of the way. I will release these videos on my YouTube channel when I release the free patterns; you can find the videos with each of the pattern parts though the links above. The videos are only available in English US Terms. I hope the videos make it possible for everyone to make the blanket.

I’m still working on the video tutorials, so not finished at this point. I hope to keep ahead of you and have a video to release each week. Doing my best!

Gauge

Gauge is not critical for this project. However, working to gauge will ensure that you have enough yarn available. If you want to work to gauge to ensure that you have enough yarn, up to and including round 6 of the pattern, your work should measure 11cm in diameter. Each pattern part includes size information to help you keep to the indicated gauge.

Support

We will make the blanket during a 12-week make along. You are welcome to share your work or ask questions in my It’s all in a Nutshell Crochet Nuts Group on Facebook. You can join my group if you need any help, or want to share your work. I will be in the group as much as possible to help you with any questions you might have, and to admire your beautiful blanket.

Thank you to my testers
