Nuts about Squares CAL

Welcome to Nuts about Squares Crochet Along 2017. In this CAL we are making 35 amazing squares designed by 11 talented designers. After joining it all together we add a textured border as the final cherry on top. In this post I summarize all relevant information and link to other parts of the CAL.

Resources and Useful Links

Yarn Information and kits

The 3 colorways Nuts about the Earth, Nuts about the Sea, and Nuts about the Sky are available as kits. You can use one of the suggested kits/colorways, or you can use your own colors and yarn.

I have kits available for all three Nuts About Squares Colorways in my SHOP HERE. Choose between Nuts About Squares – EARTH in Scheepjes Stone Washed, Nuts About Squares – SEA in Scheepjes Colour Crafter, and Nuts About Squares – SKY in Scheepjes Sunkissed.

I have a detailed post with all the yarn information, amounts, weights and color combinations for the 3 colorways, you can find the yarn/color information HERE.

Hook Sizes

You need 2 hook sizes to make the blanket. You need the following hook sizes
3.5mm (US E/4) and 4.0mm (US G/6) hook to make the Nuts about the Earth blanket.
4.0mm (US G/6) and 4.5mm (US 7) hook to make the Nuts about the Sea blanket.
3.0mm (US D/3) and 3.5mm (US E/4) hook to make the Nuts about the Sky blanket.

Blanket Size

Depending on which kit you have and your personal tension your blanket will be about 130cm x 180cm for the Colour Crafter blanket, 115cm x 160cm for the Stone Washed blanket, and 100cm x 140cm for the Sunkissed blanket.

Video tutorials

There are full video tutorials available for all aspects of the blankets. These are available in English (US terms) for right handed and left handed crafters. You can find the videos with each pattern part, or in one YouTube playlist.

    1. I’m trying to get the complete copy of the pattern for Nuts about the sea and I’m having no luck. Can you please help

      1. for each week there is a link to everything you need at the bottom of the post. under resources of each week you will find the links to the written pattern. there is not one document, but each week there is a link to the document you need
additionally the colorchart document gives the colorplacement for the sea colorway each week. also under resources.

        1. Go to the Nuts about Squares page on the blog. Scroll down to the paragraph “Quick Jump” or something like that. It has a list of things; among them is something like “Individual parts”. Click on that. It will take you to a list of the squares along with the designer names. You will have to click on each one individually. When you click on it, you will be taken to the spot where the pattern for that particular square is. Sometimes the pattern is on the designers home page, sometimes on Ravelry. I just finished the blanket late last year and getting the individual patterns was the most cumbersome thing about the whole thing. It helped (I think) to take some time and download them all at once but even so I had to refer back to this blog to be sure I had them all and that I was doing the correct number of each square. Could have been partly my problem although I have never officially been diagnosed with OCD. ??. In short, it will require a fairly big effort just to get all the patterns but in the end the blanket is worth it. I did change the final layout and also did not stick 100% of the time to the recommended number of each square. Those alterations were personal preferences and I felt like it made the blanket mine! Good luck!

  1. Thank you for this beautiful pattern, i want to do the sky but i wanna do it in DK yarn not fingering , so would you help me pick from the color crafter yarn the same colors as in your your sky blanket.
    Thank You

  2. It still is 2017 and I am starting today. I this lousy pre-winter weather I am looking forward to a lot of hours of fun.

  3. Hello. I realize that this Nuts About the Sea CAL was for 2017. Is it still possible to obtain the yarn, patterns, and tutorials? It is such a beautiful afghan.
    Thank you,

    1. yes, the patterns and videos are still available, just click through to each week where you will find all the info.
Many stores still have kits available, again the links are in this post. Otherwise I give yarn amounts so you can shop your own kit if you like a different colorcombination more.

  4. Please could you be so kind to let me know the right measure to block my square to? My week one is 22.5 cm, 9″. Shall I block the rest to this measures? Thank you in advance

  5. Thank you Esther for all your hard work!! If it wasn’t for you I would not be able to follow the instructions for such complicated work and now I have finished Circles of the Sun as a blanket and have just ordered Nuts About Squares Sky version.

  6. Are you still showing how to make The Nuts about Squares?. If not can you put them on a. ( PDF ) so I can copy them and crochet them at my own pace.
    Thank you
    Frances Carter

    1. The patterns and videos for each week are still available and will remain so. Just follow the links to each part of the pattern. For each week there is a section “Resources” which has everything you need.

        1. You are responding to a post about a crochet along that ran in 2017. By clicking on all the links in this post you will find all the information you need.
There is info about the final blanket, yarn amounts, the links to all the parts of the pattern as they were released each week, the videos that accompanied the pattern, etc. This project is a compilation of different designs by different people, so there is no one file containing everything, you will have to collect all the pieces as you go.
There is no class to join, you can follow along at your own pace.

        2. Hi

Firstly thank you for your amazing work and sharing it with us. I love your video tutorials and your precise way in showing all the techniques.

So looking forward to starting the nuts about squares CAL. Just one thing I can’t seem to see , or maybe I’m not looking hard enough, is how many squares do I make of each individual square?

          Thank you!

        3. For each week I give a table of the colors to use for each round. With the aid of this table you can see how many squares to make of which. For most squares you need to make 3, but there are certain squares which you make only 1 or 2 of. In total you will make 35 squares.

  7. What do the number on the layout mean? For example, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.? Does that mean I make square 1 three times?

What does 8.1, 8.2 and 8.3 mean for a week that has two squares, such as week 8, with Kitten’s Claw and Tropical Paradise?

Thank you very much, looking forward to making this!

    1. Each square has a unique number inrichting the week and color combination. This is reflected in all the color charts for all the parts. Square 1.1 for example is square from week 1, colorplacement 1.

  9. Hi Esther – I’ve just completed my version of Nuts about Squares afghan and it’s sold in a charity auction. I’ve shared it on my Facebook page and would love to share also on yours but couldn’t manage. Please let me know if I can.

  10. I am enjoying this project very much. I would like to ask if the design of the mosaic cushion can be incorporated as a square in the blanket??? Any changes needed?

  11. Hi Esther! Thank you so much for pulling together such a gorgeous blanket. I got my wool as a Christmas present yesterday and can’t wait to get started! Just a quick question, as I’m in the UK do you know if all the patterns are in UK or US crochet stitches or are they a mix of both? If so, do you know I it specifies on the patterns? Thanks! Vicky 🙂

  12. Hi. I just downloaded the patterns for your nuts for squares cal. I am having some difficulty understanding where the 35 squares come from and the doorways you mention in the layout diagram ex. 1.3. Which blocks do you make multiples of ???

  13. Hello Esther and thank you for this wonderful CAL. I’m getting near your the end, only three more squares to go. I need to start blocking them, which I have kept for last as I have never done it before and I am scared of messing up. I am using a yarn that is 80% acrylic, 20% wool. Which blocking method would you recommend?

  14. Hello
I teach crochet in our shop, and would love to use this pattern, and order in the Sheepjes yarn for it. Is this pattern available in printed form? Ir can I use the online version and get each student to download the parts themselves? I don’t want to step on any toes!

    1. the pattern is not available in printed form, because each square is by a different designer.
You can best ask each participant to print the pattern for themselves, that is completely within copyrights.
      Enjoy making this blanket together!

  15. So frustrated I just bought the kit of yarn “sky” to make nuts Squares now I found out it does not come with instructions???? I have been trying to download them but I have an apple had it will not convert the the PDF please help! So unhappy now!

    1. There is no single file that contains the full instructions because each part is by a different designer.
Under resources for each part you find a link to the pattern, most are a pdf on Ravelry.
Then you need to add an extra round on top of the pattern by the designer to get to 44 stitches. This extra round is in the test of each post.

  17. Hi! I’m just now making the squares from the Nuts about Squares CAL. I don’t think I could make them without the videos. I wanted to say thank you! I now feel that I will be able to attempt the Rozetta CAL thanks to your videos. Thank you so very much!

  18. in the tropical delight video (at the first slide) there is a tropical delight with purple and rose. then it switches to teal and brown. I can not find the colors for the purple with rose anywhere. Can you tell me what they are please?

  19. Help! I am on the 8th group of squares. The Cats Claw is now a paid pattern. PayPal is asking for another credit card, which is odd because I use PayPal frequently. I cannot get past that step. I do not mind paying someone for their work, but this has me stumped. Plus, I want to work on! Any suggestions? Thank you.

      1. Thank you – that was my next plan. I am not of the video generation. They drive me crazy! But it’s worth it to finish – sorry I thought the designer was managing the payments and I couldn’t find anything recent from her. I will ask Ravelry! Thanks for you speedy reply – I know, you can see me sitting with my hook, anxious to continue!

  20. Thank you so much for this beautiful design. I learned so much from making each square and I am I much better with crochet now. Your videos were very helpful with the hard patterns. Thanks again for creating this unique project!

  21. Thanks to the beautiful video’s I recently finished my Nuts about squares blanket. I learned a lot, and I saw so many more beautiful projects on your You Tube chanel, you are an inspiration Esther! And I visited websites of some of the designers too. Never a dull moment again…. Thank you so much!

  22. What is the color way for the orange, grey, off white, and blue color combination? It’s shown in one of the pictures. This looks like fun and I’d like to start if I can find the English instructions. Thank you.

    1. Nuts About Squares consists of 14 parts. In parts 1 to 12 you make 35 squares in total. In Part 13 you join them and in part 14 you make a border. It sounds like you have all the squares made, now you can join them in part 13. Click on the link for part 13 in the list towards the bottom of the post

  23. I’m planning to make a Nuts About Squares as a gift and will be using worsted wight yarn. Do you have an estimate of yardage needed for each color?

  24. Good morning. Do you ship to Australia and if so how to I manage the payment for the yarn and shipping? I would like to order Nuts about squares in the earth tone if this is still possible?

  25. Hello! I have just finished this blanket in the sea colours and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your guidance. Your tutorials and instructions were so easy to follow and this project was just so enjoyable. It’s my first big project and now I can’t wait to start another one. I used really cheap yarn because I wasn’t sure if I would finish it, but now that I know I can, I will invest properly! Thank you so much!

  26. Hello Esther, Thank you so much for a wonderful CAL thats the first time I have tried and you were so calm and easy to follow. I did use the written patterns too but for the more complicated squares following along with you was just great. I loved doing it and learnt so much.
