Contributing Designers

Nuts about Squares is a blanket with 35 lovely squares designed by 11 talented crochet designers. Some of them are well known and admired for their fabulous designs, others are perhaps less known. Contributing designers are Dedri Uys, Helen Shrimpton, Polly Plum, Sigrun Hugoey, Melissa Green, Heather Gibbs, Julie Yeager, Margaret MacInnis, Susan Stevens/Mellie Blossom, Aurora Suominen, and Tatsiana Kupryianchyk. Each square has been carefully selected to ensure that the squares work together well in their look and feel.

Size

The squares used in Nuts about Squares are all originally designed for worsted weight yarn with a 5.0mm or 5.5mm hook and measure 12 inches. However, I have used Double Knit, Sport weight and Fingering weight yarn to have smaller sized blankets. The final sizes of the blankets are approximately

Gauge

As such gauge is not critical in this project. What is important is that all your squares are the same size. For each square the recommended hook size will be given which should help you to get a consistent size between all your squares.

The yarn amounts and blanket sizes are estimated on squares which have the following dimensions:

  • Color Crafter – 25cm (10in)
  • Stone Washed – 22cm (9in)
  • Sunkissed – 20cm (7.5in)

If your squares are larger, that is not a problem for the final blanket. It can however imply that you could run out of yarn, even though there is some extra yarn in the kits.

Difficulty

In my opinion this project can be classified as intermediate, or suitable for the adventurous beginner. I hope that the detailed video tutorials help to make the project suitable for beginners also.

Materials

To make a Nuts about Squares blanket you need yarn in 6 colors and 2 crochet hook sizes. There are 3 kits available that contain 6 colors which I have labeled colors A to F. I refer to these color labels during the entire CAL when specifying colorways for each square.

Meet the testers

Planning and testing a CAL is a lot of work, I have worked for more than a year on the details of Nuts about Squares. I could not have done it on my own and my gratitude goes out to my testers Lynn, Minno, Åza, ChiChi, Laurene, and Betty. They helped me with selecting squares, choosing colors, making the sample blankets and determining yarn amounts. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart ❤

With love,

Esther

        1. Go to the Nuts about Squares page on the blog. Scroll down to the paragraph “Quick Jump” or something like that. It has a list of things; among them is something like “Individual parts”. Click on that. It will take you to a list of the squares along with the designer names. You will have to click on each one individually. When you click on it, you will be taken to the spot where the pattern for that particular square is. Sometimes the pattern is on the designers home page, sometimes on Ravelry. I just finished the blanket late last year and getting the individual patterns was the most cumbersome thing about the whole thing. It helped (I think) to take some time and download them all at once but even so I had to refer back to this blog to be sure I had them all and that I was doing the correct number of each square. Could have been partly my problem although I have never officially been diagnosed with OCD. 😏😏. In short, it will require a fairly big effort just to get all the patterns but in the end the blanket is worth it. I did change the final layout and also did not stick 100% of the time to the recommended number of each square. Those alterations were personal preferences and I felt like it made the blanket mine! Good luck!

    1. yes, the patterns and videos are still available, just click through to each week where you will find all the info.
Many stores still have kits available, again the links are in this post. Otherwise I give yarn amounts so you can shop your own kit if you like a different colorcombination more.

  4. Thank you Esther for all your hard work!! If it wasn’t for you I would not be able to follow the instructions for such complicated work and now I have finished Circles of the Sun as a blanket and have just ordered Nuts About Squares Sky version.

        1. You are responding to a post about a crochet along that ran in 2017. By clicking on all the links in this post you will find all the information you need.
There is info about the final blanket, yarn amounts, the links to all the parts of the pattern as they were released each week, the videos that accompanied the pattern, etc. This project is a compilation of different designs by different people, so there is no one file containing everything, you will have to collect all the pieces as you go.
There is no class to join, you can follow along at your own pace.

  6. What do the number on the layout mean? For example, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.? Does that mean I make square 1 three times?

What does 8.1, 8.2 and 8.3 mean for a week that has two squares, such as week 8, with Kitten’s Claw and Tropical Paradise?

Thank you very much, looking forward to making this!
